Eli (Denzel Washington) has been on a journey for 30 years, walking west across America after a cataclysmic war that turned the earth into a total wasteland. The world has become a lawless civilization where people must kill or be killed. The barren roads belong to gangs of cutthroats who rob and kill for water, a pair of shoes, a lighter, or just for fun. Eli is a peaceful man who only acts in se... lf defense, and becomes a warrior with unbelievable killing skills when he is challenged. After the war and the "Big Flash", Eli was guided by a higher power to a hidden book and given the task of protecting the book and taking it to its final destination. I used to think the apocalypse was so tomorrow. Lately at the movies, though, what with Zombieland and 2012 and The Road and Daybreakers, the end of the world seems so yesterday. Another day, another sky full of ash. Another ribbon of highway littered with charred vehicles and human remains. While we're on the subject: Why doesn't the apocalypse ever figure into a film like Leap Year or Did You Hear About the Morgans? Where it could really do some narrative good?
This week brings a lean, stark, surprisingly effective headliner in Hollywood's ongoing apoc-a-pala-looza. The Book of Eli marks a return to form for co-directors Allen and Albert Hughes, w...
For the third time in four months, after 2012 and The Road, the end of the world as we now know it is up on the bigscreen, in The Book of Eli. An odyssey of a mysterious wanderer who has spent 30 years making his way across desolate post-apocalyptic landscapes in possession of the world's only remaining Bible, the Hughes Brothers' first feature in nine years reps a weirdly intriguing mix of Mad Max, The Postman, Fahrenheit 451, Leone's Man With No Name trilogy and Graham Greene's novel The Power and the Glory, all shot through with an unwavering religious impulse. In all likelihood, this will not be one of star (and producer) Denzel Washington's bigger grosser...
I disagree with (Vitakinesis) This movie doesn’t have an average storyline. I know I’m a writer (Not saying I’m an editor thank god). Where as most post apocalyptic stories drag out meaningless information; this plot doesn’t take place thousands of years after the incident occurred it only takes place years after everything occurred. The acting wasn’t supposed to be out of this world’ you were supposed to focus on (who is this guy? why is he doing what he’s doing? and where is it all going to end up?) The storyline was great in my opinion. If you go behind the scenes to actually watch how they shot this movie you’ll appreciate it that much more.
Give this movie a shot, ignore the negative reviews.
I was shocked that I ended up loving this movie! [SPOILER]
im not big on religion or any of that but this movie drew me in. Sure I thought it wasn't going to be good at all. Even after it took me 4 actual times to actually get into the movie I'm glad I gave it another try. the end was such a great twist of having Eli be a blind man. It was crazy of so much he had to store in his head and then to have the guy do so much killing and robbing and his men raping women just for the power for what he wanted as he described it to have "power" was the ultimate karma!
