Don't be put off - this is an under-rated gem!
I had to add my views after reading the other reviews - I found this film compulsive, compelling, original and even challenging. Yes, it does unfold slowly - most of Polanski's movies do - but the central story is arresting and intriguing. I do agree the ending kind of leaves things open, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I believe all the answers are there, you just need to decide for yourself.
Depp is good as ever, and Langella is perfect for his role. Please don't follow the herd, watch this and make up your own mind!
Oh dear.
Despite a charming performance from Johnny Depp and some low-key hamming from Frank Langhella, this is a stinker.
It takes a very long time to unravel a fairly uninteresting mystery, with some devil/angel stuff thrown in for good measure.
Even the engaging Depp seems to be floundering at times - he's peculiarly unconvincing in the (admittedly unnecessary) sex scenes. Mildly amusing in places, never scary. I can only imagine everyone concerned thought Roman Polanski had something better up his sleeve than the final product.
